Aishwarya to host Colin Firth?

The actress caught up with The Last Legion co-star at the Oscars and extended an invitation to him to visit Mumbai.

Academy award winner Colin Firth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan go back. They first met when they acted in the Hollywood big budget movie The Last Legion (add year of release) and they've stayed in touch. So naturally this year the actress was rooting for Colin at the Oscars. She was seen cheering when he won the Best Actor award for The King's Speech. She was disappointed when he didn't win last year for his performance for A Single Man.

When they met at the after party, she congratulated him warmly and introduced him to her husband, Abhishek. She even raised a toast for him. Later, they talked about a possible meeting during her stay in LA. In case their schedule didn't permit this, they talked about connecting with him next month. Colin was ecstatic with his Oscar win and was overheard saying he couldn't believe he was holding the trophy in his hand. They spoke for about 10 minutes and agreed to catch up again when the madness (the entire Hollywood junta wanted a piece of Colin at the party) surrounding Colin subsided.

Although there is speculation whether she has plans to host him in Mumbai and celebrate his success here, everyone is tight-lipped about the details. However, we hear that Colin's trip to India is anyway overdue as Ash had extended an invitation to him when they last worked together.

Aishwarya Rai to sue Elle magazine cover 'skin-whitening' scandal

Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is fuming over Elle magazine cover 'skin-whitening' scandal, reveal her pals.

Fans of the actress were left stunned last week after her skin appeared to have been digitally lightened on the cover of the magazine's new issue.

According to friends, the 37-year-old Bollywood star, who is widely believed to be the world''s most beautiful woman, is said to be considering suing the Indian version of the title over what has been deemed ''racist airbrushing''.

The actress herself has not commented on the situation, but friends of the 'Bride and Prejudice' star have said she is ''furious''.

"Aishwarya''s first reaction was disbelief," the Daily Mail quoted one of herpal as saying.

"She believed that these things don''t happen anymore. Not in this day and age when women are recognised for their merit, and not for the colour of their skin.

"She is currently verifying this skin-whitening allegation. If there is any proof of this, she might even take action," the pal said.

"She is clearly the global face of the contemporary Indian woman. The last thing she''d want is to have a global image coloured by a racial suggestion," another pal added.

Neither Elle magazine or Mrs Bachan were available for comment today.

The actress, a former Miss World who is married to fellow actor Abhishek Bachchan, is thought to be too preoccupied by her father, who is ill, to look into the matter further.

Elle in race row for whitening Ash's skin

Fashion bible Elle magazine has been caught in a race row after reportedly whitening the skin of Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on its cover.

Readers reacted with anger after it was suggested that the fashion magazine might have digitally "bleached" the complexion of the former Miss World.

The 37-year-old, who has also starred in Bride & Prejudice and The Pink Panther 2, appears on the cover of this month's Indian edition of the magazine. However, her skin appears to be several shades lighter than her normal colour.

Inside the magazine, she is again pictured in a series of shots, all showing her with pale skin, reports the Daily Mail.

Fans have been posting angry comments online about the latest cover, with one saying: "It's annoying because it seems like lighter skin is always in fashion as if darker skin is something to be frowned upon."

Time Is The Essence Of Timeless Beauty

Aishwarya Rai has come a long way from the time she used to endorse a television company in the 90s, and with time the lady has only made it bigger from winning the Miss World in 1994 to become a huge success in the film industry.

Rai-Bachchan has also become one of the main faces of Indian film industry in Hollywood. But this timeless beauty has always been in harmony with time.

Once again Aishwarya Rai proved it when she walked down the ramp in a Gauri and Nainika Karan designed blue gown at Taj Palace hotel for the promotion of Longines Dolce Vita watch collection. At the launch party of the watches Mrs. Rai Bachchan shared her experience of shooting a commercial for the brand in Rome along with Kate Winslet and Chi Ling Lin.

The Durbar Hall of the Taj Palace was transformed into the Roma of 60s that came out of Fredrico Fellini's films. The ambience was perfect as Italian jazz numbers were performed and two dancers took the stage during the event too.

Ten watches that were showcased at the launch party of Longines Dolce Vita, had their price from Rs.95,000 to that of Rs. 2.6 lakh. While Aishwarya flaunted the gown in rich blue the other models were clad in rich hues like burgundy, wine red, dark shades of green, black and white.

Katrina's loss is Aishwarya's gain!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan may have lost Salman Khan to Katrina Kaif, but the tables have turned in their professional lives.

According to reports in the media, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been roped in to play the role of 'Debi Chaudhurani' in an upcoming Rituparno Ghosh project, the same role for which the ace Bengali director's originally choice was Katrina Kaif.

In a statement to the media, Rituparno Ghosh confirms that he is indeed making an on screen adaptation of Debi Chaudhurani and if all goes well Aishwarya Rai Bachchan may also be a part of the movie.

However, Rituparno Ghosh is not prepared to make any final commitment at the present moment because he is presently busy with another dance – based Bengali movie. Moreover, Aishwarya too, will take some time off with hubby Abhishek Bachchan to enjoy a romantic vacation.

The media though refuses to stop speculations, and the latest reports claim that the Bollywood actress had been in talks with her favorite Bengali film director last week when she and Abhishek were in Kolkata to collect the Anandaloke awards for the best actress and best actor respectively for their performances in Raavan.

This however was only a telephonic conversation and nothing has been confirmed on pen and paper. Rituparno Ghosh has said that he will wait for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to return from her Christmas holidays, and he too will complete work on his dance project in the meanwhile, only then can the duo decide on their future film on 'Debi Chaudhurani'.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has starred in Rituparno Ghosh's 'Chokher Bali' and 'Raincoat' in the past and very naturally Rituda is one of her favorite directors. The film adaptation of the Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay novel may not be a bilingual as earlier reported, confirmed Rituparno Ghosh.

'Guzaarish' producers defend smoking scene

The producers of Guzaarish have defended Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s smoking scene in the film, describing it as a script requirement.

Responding to a protest letter sent by the National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE), producers UTV said: "The scene in which the character played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is shown smoking was merely a creative requirement for the script."

The organisation objected to posters for the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film featuring the scene in which the actress smokes.

"The poster of the film picks and chooses the same frame in their advertisement campaign. Actually this is a clandestine advertisement of a tobacco product," a NOTE spokesperson told PTI.

However the actress in her is not yet satiated and she is thus reportedly going in for a signing up on quite a few new projects these days. The most popular star wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has also proved that marriage is a jinx for any actress in B town and has got a lot of important projects in her kitty right after she tied the nuptial knot with Abhishek Bachchan.

These days there is news floating around that director Vishal Bharadwaj is planning to sign Aishwarya and Hrithik Roshan for his project on the Shakespearean play Hamlet.

Now with Ash getting such great offers even as she has crossed the 35 plus mark in her birthday count one really wonders –is she plain lucky to get to work with the best of directors in B town?

Aishwarya won't make love

The new chapter in the hunt for a heroine to play lead in Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine has just launched.

Bhandarkar can deny is till kingdom comes, but sources confirm that the coveted role has been has been passed on to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan through the film's co-producer UTV.

UTV has approached Rai Bachchan to take over the part that was to be played by Kareena Kapoor, but one on condition -- the director will have to say bye bye to the torrid love making scenes.

Says a source close to the project, "When Madhur says he hasn't approached Aishwarya for the role, he is technically correct. He didn't directly approach her. UTV did. But Madhur will have a meeting with Aishwarya only after he alters the script."

Kareena is believed to have had two problems with the role, forcing her to opt our -- the passionate scenes for one, and the fact that the script resembled the relationship she shares with actor-boyfriend Saif Ali Khan and his children from ex-wife Amrita Singh.

UTV is said to have felt Rai bachchan was perfect for the part of a cinematic diva. Now, Bhandarkar will have to wait to work with Kareena again. He was keen that she do Page 3, but Kareena said she couldn't identify with the journalist's part. Ironically, she had to ditch Heroine because she identified with the part a wee bit much.

Anti-tobacco group fumes over Aishwarya's cigarette act

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who will be seen lighting up in her forthcoming release 'Guzaarish', has set the anti-tobacco lobby aflame with anger.

"The display of the posters showing Aishwarya smoking raises worries in our mind that they could be trand-setters," said a statement released Tuesday by Dr. Shekhar Salkar, general secretary of the National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE).

He said the group has written to the actress as well, and asked her to withdraw posters of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest film "Guzarish", showing the Bachchan bahu smoking a cigarette.

Salkar said many film stars, who confess about their aversion to smoking in private, routinely smoke on screen, taking refuge in phrases like 'freedom of expression'.

"There are innumerable posters of 'Guzaarish' all over Mumbai. There would be many other scenes which could convey the storyline of the film, yet the producer has chosen this particular one, quite oblivious to its after-effects," Salkar said.

NOTE has in the past dragged Bollywood superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to court over promoting tobacco.

The group had also complained against Ajay Devgn, who was photographed smoking while shooting in Goa for "Golmaal 3". The star was fined Rs.100 for his indiscretion.

Aishwarya Wants To Work In Tamil Films After Endhiran Success

Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says that she is ready to embrace more of Tamil cinema after working on the blockbuster 'Endhiran'.

Four films old back south, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is now well acquainted with the language, though she still can't risk speaking Tamil on a regular basis. The actress also feels that Tollywood is one of the fastest growing film industries and she would like to be a part of more Tamil films in the future.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who started her career with Tamil film 'Iruvar', has done three more films for the Tollywood film industry and today the actress feels that her understanding of the language has improved after her work in 'Jeans', 'Raavanan' and 'Endhiran'. Travelling and interacting with a number of people, says the actress, is the reason why she could pick up the Tamil dialect so quickly, even if she did not have to speak in the language other than the dialogues which were provided to her in a script.

Speaking about her role in 'Endhiran', Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says that it was not a very difficult role to essay onscreen but she is very thankful to director Shankar, whom she had also worked with in 'Jeans', for offering her a role that any mainstream heroine would love doing at any point of time in her career.

So now that the stunning beauty is more at ease with the local language and also well acquainted with the director, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says that it will be a pleasure to come back to Kollywood for a Shankar film once again.

Will Aishwarya And Hrithik's Matured Look In Guzaarish Work?

: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan are such names, which are enough to create an interest among the audience to make a beeline to the theaters, irrespective of what characters, they are enacting in a film

However, the forth coming flick 'Guzaarish' is one film where both the stars will be seen in a far more matured look and in a different character style.

Now, when it comes to playing the hot and sexy characters, as both of them had been seen in 'Dhoom 2', they certainly were above the average mark. Even in period drama roles, as was seen in the massive and elaborate 'Jodha Akbar', both had created magic on screen with their amazing portrayal of the characters. The film was amongst the most popular in the Indian cinema category, however, this time, the two are in a totally different genre of cinema.

Going by the promos of the film, both Aishwarya and Hrithik look slightly more matured, and with Hrithik initially playing a magician and then falling prey to a disease, as seen in a bearded and helpless state, due to his paraplegic attack, it seems that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has certainly penned down a much innovative character, quite a difficult task to achieve to say the least.

On the other hand, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sports the typical matured and confident woman look, as she portrays the character of a nurse, possessing immense mental strength, as in trying to cure the paraplegic Hrithik by pure love, passion and adopting a different approach which seems to speak of a dedication that certainly is praiseworthy.

It really seems to be a treat for the Aishwarya and Hrithik fans to see them in this very tangent form of acting, which is in totally different from what they have done before on screen as co-stars, or even with other actors that they've worked with.

The million dollar question is, will Aishwarya and Hrithik's matured look in Guzaarish, work its magic at the box office?

Bollywood flirts with going global

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai had a simple anecdote to offer when asked whether she thought India's film industry now had a global reach.

Visiting the 15th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in the South Korean seaside city of Busan, Rai told how a question and answer session had begun earlier in the day.

"A Korean lady got up to ask the first question and she asked it in perfect Hindi," said Rai. "I was so surprised but I guess that shows that these days Indian culture is everywhere -- and so are Indian films."

Rai has been at Asia's premier film festival to promote her latest productions, the action blockbusters "Raavan" and "Raavanan", along with her husband and co-star Abhishek Bachchan and the film's director Mani Ratnam.

Talk inevitably turned to the Indian film industry, the world's largest in terms of annual production numbers with more than 1,000 new films hitting cinemas each year.

The international film industry as a whole has been wondering when some of those lavish productions might be able reach out to the world.

The Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008) -- set in the Mumbai slums and featuring an Indian cast -- certainly showed that there was global interest in India and Indian stories, but the Danny Boyle-directed production was British funded, scripted and produced.

Ratnam, responsible for 22 films during a 27-year career, among them some of the country's biggest domestic box office hits, said the time had come for Indian cinema to go international.

Indian cinema had remained "not totally-Hollywood-ized", said Ratnam, and audiences appreciated the fact.

"You have this wonderful opportunity to be able to go abstract, to convert to something very emotional and to an abstract form and then come back to the logical direction again," he said, referring to the fact that Bollywood productions often veer off into the unexpected, like song and dance routines.

"So it just gives you freedom not to be restricted to a very strict dramatic form."

Ratnam's latest film -- about a woman who falls in love with her kidnapper -- has picked up an international distribution deal.

Also in Busan this week is John Cooper, scouting Asian films in his role as director of the annual Sundance Film Festival, held in the US state of Utah.

He is heading the jury for PIFF's Flash Forward award, which looks at films from first- and second-time non-Asian directors.

Sundance has become synonymous with independent cinema -- and with unearthing films from the far reaches of the cinematic universe.

Cooper believes that global success for any film industry comes once films from that particular industry are no longer simply filed under "exotic."

The cinema world has been looking to Asia for a number of years, he said.

"I think when it comes to attracting a major audience it all comes down to familiarity," he said.

"An example of this is the San Francisco Indian Film Festival. Their crowds doubled in size after 'Slumdog Millionaire' simply because people saw that film and wanted to know more about India and so more about what was happening in Indian cinema."

It was curiosity that first led 26-year-old Brazilian director Beatriz Seigner to India and, after travelling there, she immersed herself in the country's culture -- and its cinema.

So much so that her first production, "Bollywood Dreams", has just become the first-ever co-Brazilian-Indian film production.

It, too, has been screening in Busan this week and Seigner revealed that there might be plenty more on the way after the recent signing of a co-production agreement between the film industries of the two countries.

"My experience was certainly unique," said Seigner, whose comedy follows the exploits of three Brazilian women who try to break into Bollywood.

"But even at home in Brazil we are finding more and more people want to watch Indian films and more people know about the Indian film industry."

"Bollywood Dreams" will be released in Brazil in February and Seigner has hopes for success, even though her domestic industry is struggling.

"It is hard to make money through films in Brazil," she said. "But we think we have something different -- it is certainly different -- and I think that is what interests people about Indian films too."

Considering the amount of money available in the domestic box office some have questioned whether Indian films really need a wider audience.

But Bachchan thinks it is inevitable -- simply, he says, because India makes good films.

"To think, one out of six people in the world is Indian, I think we are pretty globalised," he said.

"But I don't think the question is about global domination. It's about taking your work and getting it shown to as many people as possible, who would believe that it's something worth watching."

Aishwarya allows Abhishek to romance Katrina

When Vipul Shah approached Aishwarya to cast her opposite hubby Abhishek in The Italian Job, she ended up recommending Katrina Abhishek Bachchan and Katrina Kaif are set to star in Vipul Shah's upcoming film, The Italian Job; a remake of the Hollywood film by the same name starring Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron.

This puts an end to whispers about animosity between the two actors. Rumours included Katrina declining the film because it starred Abhishek Bachchan, and yet another about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan preventing Abhishek from doing films with Katrina.

Says a source, "Vipul's first option was to cast Abhishek and Aishwarya. It was Aishwarya who prompted Vipul to cast Katrina instead." This is not the first time that Aishwarya has suggested another actress in her place.

Previously, the actor recommended Priyanka Chopra for Dostana. Says Shah, "All I can say at the moment is that Aishwarya has absolutely no objections to the Abhishek-Katrina pair on screen."

On her part, Katrina confirms that she has no issues working with Abhishek either. "All these ridiculous rumours about me not working with Abhishek started when my dates for The Italian Job didn't work out, and Dostana 2 got postponed.

Abhishek is a great guy. I did Sarkar with him at the start of my career. There were other offers but I felt they were not good enough to do justice to our pairing. I decided that whenever we work together again, it would be for a full-blown romantic comedy."
