"When I met former American President Bill Clinton for dinner, he was tickled by the idea of a political rom-com that traces the love affair between a die-hard Democrat and a Republican loyalist in the frantic days leading up to the 2008 US presidential elections. He said that it was time a film like this was made,” says an upbeat Mallika Sherawat.
The actor plays Aretha Gupta, an Obama volunteer, in Love, Barack—Politics Of Love. A month before D-Day, Gupta, madly and unexpectedly, falls for her Republican counterpart. Brain J White (Men Of A Certain Age) enacts the role of the handsome, dynamic Afro-American who steals her heart despite their differing political ideologies, Earlier, Avatar star Laz Alonso was to play the role.
Apparently, President Barack Obama’s double also has a significant part in this tongue-in-cheek take on politics. And Hollywood veterans, Loretta Divine and Ruby Dee, feature as Gupta’s mother and grandmother respectively.
Muse Kamala Harris
The character of Gupta has its muse in Kamala Harris, the attorney general of San Francisco. Sherawat had earlier tweeted: “I will B’ shadowing’ Harris to research my new movie. It’s an amazing role.”
Love, Barack is inspired by the many publicly documented campaign romances that sprung up around the Obama Presidential win, which experts speculate resulted in an Obama baby boom. “I loved the script. It’s fun and should bring families together. And I loved working with veteran Hollywood director William Dear,” Sherawat gushes.
The movie is co-produced by Govind Menon, along with Hollywood producer William Keenan’s company Nuclear Mango. Bill Clinton has told the actor that he’d love to watch it. What about President Obama? “I hope he’ll be there at the premiere too,” Sherawat laughs. “Nothing is impossible!”
