A Boston jazz musician improvises, dumping one woman and meeting another, in Damien Chazelle's extraordinary black-and-white retro dream of a feature debut, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. The director, now 25, dropped out of college and cast a real trumpeter (Jason Palmer) to make his gloriously personal project, which incorporates bits of 1960s French New Wave, shreds of John Cassavetes, and swatches of 1930s movie musicals to describe how love feels.
